ANDREW MUIR WRITER

Man Out of Time

Eric Whittle has had a bad year; his wife has left him for another woman, his children are not talking to him, he’s lost his job. Depressed, he seeks refuge in the bottom of a whisky bottle and his Elvis Costello record collection.

When best friend Mike Bradley drags him along to see a performance by TV celebrity and self-styled ‘Psychic illusionist’ Aloysius Riviera, it is a decision that they will both soon regret. Riviera is no ordinary TV celebrity; the man has hidden depths. When a cynically drunk  Eric publicly ridicules his act, he soon discovers he has badly under-estimated the performer’s talents.

Now, each time Eric listens to a nostalgic song from his record collection, he finds himself plunged back to the time he associates with that song. If that’s not bizarre enough, he finds to his utter horror, that actions he takes whilst undertaking these ‘trips’ through time have a profound effect on his present-day life.

Suddenly, back in the present day, he’s married to another woman and his children don’t exist. Alarmed, he tries to go back to undo the damage. However, changing things back proves more difficult than he imagines  and the more he meddles in the past, the more complicated the situation becomes. Before he knows it, Eric’s life is spiralling dangerously out of control.

Excerpts from 5* Amazon Reviews for Man Out Of Time

A compulsively exciting novel about a man who foolishly insults an egotistical celebrity hypnotist and ends up time travelling every time he hears one of his favourite songs…..I read it pretty quickly as I kept wanting to know what happens next. Always a good sign.
For those readers of a certain age (such as myself) the book is also a joyful journey through the 1980s and 1990s. Mr Muir nails the atmosphere, the music, the fashions and the activities of the period perfectly and I found myself almost taking my own time journey along with the characters.

A time travelling ripping good yarn that also takes you down memory lane at the same time. It kept me wanting to know what happens next all the way through. Five stars.

Absolutely loved this book, read it in under a week! I couldn’t put the book down! Really recommend it.

…a highly imaginative tale of time travel with an exciting difference

…wonderfully often sad and sometimes comic episodes experienced by the traveller. Highly recommended.

About Andrew Muir

Author of Contemporary coming-of-age novels with a nostalgic and humourous, bittersweet twist

Born in Brighton, I moved to Steyning in 2001. A keen gardener,  I can usually be found either in the garden or on my allotment in my spare time, more often that not simultaneously listening to music on my headphones. If I’m not there, I will probably be at the Amex Stadium watching my beloved Brighton and Hove Albion, or at home designing t-shirts.

The youngest of seven children, I attended school and sixth form college in Brighton. On leaving sixth form, I worked in insurance for many, many years, whilst  harbouring a constant itch  to write. By 2008, having attended several creative writing courses and written many short stories, the inch became unbearable. Leaving my career in insurance behind me, I worked part-time in education whilst writing my first novel “Does Everyone Stare The Way I Do?” in 2008. My second book “Every Little Thing She Does”, a sequel to the first, was orginally published in 2011. Both have recently been re-edited and re-launched, in time for the publication of my third, stand-alone novel, ‘Flickin’ Wardy to Wembley’ in 2021. I’m planning to write my next novel soon.

“With the soundtrack of my youth as the backdrop to this lovely book, I was taken back to a time of insecurity, hope, dreams and the unshakable certainty of a golden future. Nostalgia and joy. Buy and enjoy.”
